Man charged with helping woman steal, burn own car
SEBRING -- A 31-year-old man has been jailed after investigators said he helped a Sebring woman burn her own car on May 3.
Jose Manuel Romero, of Lake Placid, was booked Wednesday on charges of second-degree arson and arson with intent to defraud and insurer.
On May 4, Tracy Reed contacted the Highlands County Sheriff's Office to report that her 2011 Jaguar XF had been stolen from her residence. Later that same day the burnt vehicle was located at Morningside Drive and Morning Mist Avenue in Lake Placid. Reed was arrested May 30 and charged with second degree arson, grand theft of less than $5,000, burning with intent to defraud an insurer, insurance fraud of less than $20,000, a second count of insurance fraud of less than $100,000 and false report of a crime.
Reed, 45 and of Sebring, has been released on $42,000 bond.
HCSO reports said that Reed exchanged text messages with Romero indicating that she met him on the night her car was discovered. Reed told investigators that she didn't leave her home after 9 p.m. that night. The content of most of the text messages was redacted from the arrest report, but Reed and Romero allegedly had an exchange of messages on the night the car was burned, with Romero telling Reed to come and her replying she is almost there. Reed then reportedly texted "U?" to Romero, who replied, "Stop."
The texts show that the two met that night, the report said.

What really happened was that it got so hot and heavy in the car that night it did spontaneous combustion.
