TriPOWER gearing up for Nationals
Special to the News-Sun
SEBRING - Two years into their program, youth triathlon Team TriPOWER is sending three times as many members to IronKids Nationals as they did in their first year.
The national season-finale race is attended by elite youth triathletes from around the country and the only ticket into the big race is by qualifying at one of the year-round regional races.
Team TriPOWER sent 24 team members to IronKids Florida, held in Haines City, and took second place honors overall as a team.
That strong showing netted 12 qualifiers for IronKids Nationals at Iowa.
The team ranking is a culmative representation of each team member's individual effort.
"We are extremely proud of what this team is able to accomplish," coach Dan Andrews said. "The kids, as evidenced by their strong showing in Haines City, have a drive and tenacity for excellence. Myself, Coach (Chris) Doty and the rest of the team parents and coaches, we're just here to provide direction to that natural competitive streak."
With an initial membership of about 15 youths, the racing club has exploded to about 40 active participating children.
Several parents, each with their own strengths, share coaching duties so that they can work with members in smaller groups, based on maturity and ability.
"It was an honor to watch so many of our kids perform exceptionally well on an extremely difficult bike course," Doty said. "Many coaches and spectators remarked about how well TriPOWER athletes handled the difficult bike course. I couldn't be prouder of these kids and their hard work!"
As a middle school principal, Doty is well-versed in the art of balancing work and fun.
He and the other coaches are constantly self-evaluating to make sure they're instilling the proper training ethic to help these children excel while keeping practices, training and even actual races fun enough that they don't burn out.
TriPOWER members train in three disciplines: swim, bike and run.
It's something most of them are already doing, whether on an organized team or just out playing with siblings and friends, making the pursuit of triathlon a sport the whole family can do together.
After Haines City, TriPOWER competed at Heartland Triathlon and now they're gearing up for Scenic 17 at Babson Park and other nearby races.
In addition to racing, TriPOWER members are active in a variety of other sports including martial arts, gymnastics, baseball and cheer..
With many other activities and families traveling for summer vacation, TriPOWER's leadership anticipates a challenging fundraising season to subsidize the travel expenses of all the IronKids Nationals qualifiers who want to attend.
Stephanie White, TriPOWER team mom, has volunteered to step up and spearhead the fundraising efforts.
She's asking that you keep an eye on Facebook and newspaper articles so that you can know about various events such as Chili's Give Back Night and a volleyball tournament at Don Jose's Mexican Restaurant and other fundraising activities.
"Being able to watch our children compete at a national event among the nation's best athletes is truly remarkable," White said. "It is amazing how friends, family, and communities come out to support our efforts at making this a reality for these talented athletes. Please follow our Facebook Group to stay informed on all of our events and progress through this journey!"
One of the first fundraisers is a perennial favorite for Sebring: the Chili's Give Back program.
Chili's has an excellent track record of helping local organizations near and dear all our hearts so we are pleased to announce they've included TriPOWER for a second year.
For 12 hours on July 16, Chili's will donate 10-percent of receipt sales to Tri 4 Nationals ~ Team TriPOWER.
You must present the flier (available at Facebook.com/groups/Tri4Nationals).
Information about the Beach Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, July 27, can also be found on Facebook.
