Legion Department Commander encourages membership locally

Special to the News-Sun

AVON PARK -- Depart-ment Commander Paul Martel made a stop at all three American Legion Posts in Highlands County to lend them encouragement and support

for their upcoming year.

Martel and his staff also attended Avon Park Post 69's joint installation with Sebring Post 74. Martel being a fabulous motivator encouraged District 8 American Legion Auxiliary President Darlene Watkin to make a 100 percent District Membership.

This year's commanders' theme is Reaching for the Stars. Watkins and District 8 Commander Richard Francis encourage everyone to get their memberships sent in early.

The Auxiliary will be having a back-to-school party for the girls at Hansen House on Sunday, Aug. 10, with water slides, hot dogs, baked goods and giving out of school supplies. Anyone wishing to donate to young people in the area in need for school supplies, call Watkin at 314-9107. There is still a need for pens, notebooks and book packs for teenagers.

Also, $20 Wal-Mart gift cards would allow the girls to purchase the extra little things needed to begin their schooling.
