Riot at Avon Park Youth Academy
AVON PARK -- Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a riot at the Avon Park Youth Academy Saturday night.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the call for help from the Youth Academy, which is located near the Avon Park Correction Institution in Polk County, came at 8:40 p.m.
The PCSO set up a perimeter, the release said. As of midnight, emergency responders were being released from the scene to return to their stations and there had been no official word of any escapes from the facility.
The PCSO was joined by several other agencies in the area to handle the situation, including Florida Highway Patrol, Fish and Wildlife Conservation officer, the Avon Park Police Department and the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, the release said. There was also air support, SWAT and K-9 teams on-scene as well.
Several ambulances were requested at the scene and there were reportedly fires inside the facility. Both Florida Hospital and Highlands Regional emergency rooms were "overwhelmed" with patients, according to scanner traffic.

It is really hard to do any thing with the kids because DJJ does not want staff putting hands on. I think the need to be hard on the kids because they would not be where they are at if they were raised right. To all parents that have kids in DJJ programs the people that work in places like this are trying to fix the problem not baby the kids. I think kids these days need a belt across there buts a little more. I've work with kids like this and they need a little tough love. Why were the kids allowed to bet? Where we're the staff when this was going on? You have to keep and eye on every thing the kids do. Do research look up gangs listen to how the talk. Listen the key words. You have to know what's going around you all times where thing like this don't happen. I know its crazy when the kids strart acting out but, there are ways to redirect them. I do hope all staff and officers that went out to help are ok. And for the kids that did this your parent as going to pay for your sin.

Cry much? They're probably glad you're gone.

i have first hand experience with Avon Park.. It's a hybrid of jail and youth detention. Staff are very strict and discipline is instilled in these youth. Unfortunately, no one can keep all of the rival counties apart since these kids come from all over. Some of these boys come out better than they went in, it's all what the child wants to do with his life. The programs and rules are good for the kids that want to learn. Some kids just don't care and those are the one's that started this.Other kids were forced to either join in or take a beating. some of these kids are well over 6' and 250 lbs. I feel sorry for the smaller boys..some are barely 5'4". Don't judge unless you've been there and witnessed the program first hand.

I can't wait to hear Ms. Una Mcgolin's comment on this.

I used to work there I warned them of every problem I saw , of every infraction the company was pushing on their human rights , but they ignored me and other staff. I ended up quitting when they wanted me to work an additional 8 hours over the 8 I just worked on

Hope all the law enforcement personnel are safe. As for the ahem, "students", lock them in, set up a perimeter and let them burn it to the ground. Sick to death of coddling thugs! Need Sheriff Joe and his tent city. Treat criminals like the rabid animals that they are.

Thankfully this is in Sheriff Judd's jurisdiction instead of prissy Benton's jurisdiction. Go Polk County style on those degenerates.
