SFSC nursing professor earns special certification

AVON PARK -- Kathleen Cappo, professor, South Florida State College Nursing Education, recently earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after completing a rigorous certification examination administered by the National League for Nursing.

The certification establishes nursing education as a specialty area of practice and creates a means for faculty to demonstrate their expertise in this role. It communicates to students, peers and the academic and health care communities that the highest standards of excellence are being met within a program.

"This certification will benefit my students by ensuring that they are receiving the best quality education in an environment that meets their individual learning styles in my classroom," said Cappo. "It also provides me the opportunity to share best practices and ideas I've learned through my preparation with the entire nursing education faculty at SFSC."

"Our nursing program at SFSC is dedicated to lifelong learning and we model that to our students by seeking to promote current quality education," said Dr. Michele Heston, Director, SFSC Nursing Education. "This certification ensures that Kathleen is a specialist in the area of nursing education and that she defines her practice by the hallmarks of excellence in nursing education."

Currently, two SFSC faculty members have earned the certification and three other SFSC nursing faculty members are preparing to test for the certification.
