Training Center developer late on $2 million in taxes

By ED BALDRIDGE

ed.baldridge@newssun.com

SEBRING -- According to the Lee County Tax Collector, developer Greg Eagle, who is seeking approval for the military style Eagle Training Center near Venus in Highlands County, has more than $2 million in unpaid property taxes.

A report from the tax collector's Web site shows Eagle to have $2,031,784 in unpaid taxes dating back to 2007 on more than 100 properties.

Opponents to the facility have stated that because of the delinquent taxes, Eagle would not make a good neighbor.

"Mr. Eagle has promised to be a responsible developer, but that is doubtful. He is currently delinquent in the amount of millions of dollars for 2007 and 2008 Lee County property taxes. A number of mortgages on his Lee County properties have foreclosed or are currently in foreclosure," Ellen Peterson said in a press release Thursday.

Peterson and crew traveled to Cape Coral on Friday to protest the facility at Eagle's front door.

"You are fixing to force upon a quiet community of families ... 1,000 men. That is more than the entire male population of Venus. These are not ministers, but killers. Men coming to train to kill, explode bombs, force their way into homes ... these men will attract drug dealers, alcohol, prostitutes and violence. We do not need the blood money," wrote Sue Rosendall in a letter.

Environmental activists have protested that the facility could have a large negative impact on the county's environment, putting several species of animals at risk.

"This development will threaten the imperiled watershed of Fisheating Creek that empties into Lake Okeechobee, and will pollute and deplete an important fresh water source serving all of South Florida," Peterson explained.

Highlands County commissioners will take public input Tuesday concerning the approval of several remedial actions required by the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) who has raised several concerns about the proposed development.

In a legal document dated Feb. 25, DCA told the county that the comprehensive changes needed to allow the training center were not in compliance as per Florida Statute 163, Part II.

In short, that the county had made no provisions to properly identify the availability of a water supply.

Additionally, DCA noted that Highlands "did not provide an assessment of the environmental resources on an adjacent to the site."

Since the center would be within the Fisheating Creek watershed, the submitted county plan did not protect the water quality flowing into Lake Okeechobee.

The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the county Government Center on Commerce Avenue.

Phone calls to Eagle at his real estate office in Cape Coral went unreturned.

Facts is what it is all about  (by: by kay   -   10/9/2009)

What happen to America when facts are not the concerns. I am concerned about progress not regress that many people seem to take on this pending matter. Eagle Training CTR will be defintely an improvement. The meeting on Oct 6 provided positive facts and seems to me they wanted to work with the .people. I sure do not see that in the goverment now days. Facts are out there "open your ears and hear" dont let a few dismiss the many that want improvement in our county. Read and come involved with facts not myths that the people seem to blurt out...........

Ist good reason   (by: JWT  -   10/6/2009)

M/baker your lead contamination of the soil and maybe water from the spent rounds is the first real concern I have heard. I agree with the issue of someone investing a half billion here in Highlands County, just makes one wonder. However I think the whole thing should be investigated and a rational choice made. Nothing large like this is going to be perfect, and sometimes areas have to take a chance. In the early 60's there was a group buying up large tracts in Orange County, bets were it was either Boeing, grumman, or another defence contractor. People were very worried that there lives and property could be affected. It turned out they were exactly right, but for another reason. It was Disney World and boy did it change Orange County!

Pine Island Road  (by: na  -   10/6/2009)

Eagle is also planning a "mall" on pine island road for the tune of 400 million, do you really think he is going to do all the projects? Is this just a land grab? The DOT has to approve the widening of the road sometime this month and then the construction can move forward together. Ask yourself, how many 400 million dollar projects can one have?

Eagle Training Center  (by: Preston H. Colby  -   10/5/2009)

You might be INTERESTED THAT THE EAGLE NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER (agenda item 6), is scheduled to be “pulled” tomorrow. This morning, I asked to examine and inspect the Notice of Hearing prior to adopting or changing an Ordinance that is supposed to be filed with the Clerk of the Board, guess what? I’M TOLD NO NOTICE WAS EVER PUBLISHED. However, there is some willingness to move forward with the EAGLE ZONING change, (agenda item 7), but that Notice of Hearing was NOT filed with the Clerk until about 3:47 PM TODAY, yet the Notice itself reads that it was available for public inspection since September 21, 2009 in the Clerk’s Office. Go figure.... Regards… PHC

Eagle Training Center  (by: MJ  -   10/5/2009)

seems to me that with unemployment about to reach 10% nationally......... anyone willing to invest $425 M should be hailed as a hero not a villan. As always, the views of the screaming minority alarmists get all the coverage; I for one fully support anyone trying to be an entrepreneur..........

Training Center  (by: mbaker  -   10/4/2009)

How could anyone trust what a desperate developer says or does when he is in a do or die business situation and looks to be close to declaring bancruptcy. Do you honestly think he will not take short cuts to save cost to help his cash strapped business get back on it's feet. How many jobs will this bring to Sebring since most of the jobs filled will be for retired ex-miltary personel. I also agree with the "tree huggers" who are concerned with the environment, especially the water run-off and the high potential for lead contamination to the soil and groundwater. For anybody to think of this as a panacea for Highlands County baffles me. I am speaking from my educational background and past experience of helping to defend corporation who had violated environmental regulations in the past, and also helping those willing to get back into compliance. From my experience working with corporations, the ones most likely to violate the regulations are the ones who have low cash flow. At least this developer is not lying, only because he is not answering the questions on what concerns the people.

This gets uglier by the minute. Any commisioner who votes for approval of this disaster-on-wheels needs to have his head examined, and his ethics questioned.
