Mower racers ready to rev it up in Avon Park Saturday
By BARRY FOSTER
AVON PARK -- Members of the North American Society of Grass Racers and Sod Slingers will celebrate October on Saturday with a special appearance in the City of Charm and their first autograph session of the season.
The lawn mower racers will be part of the annual Avon Park Oktoberfest during the day Saturday with a static display of mowers. They also will have information about the NASGRASS series, which races the second Saturday of each month at the Avon Park Mowerplex off Herrick Avenue on the far west end of the Avon Park Municipal Airport.
"We love coming out to meet fans and talk with people," said Michael Graves, who drives in the popular iMOW racing division.
His ride -- dubbed ""Pinky" because of the striking black and pink paint job -- will be on display with other machines. The NASGRASS racers most recently made a stop at the Sebring Thunder car show, where Graves fired up the engine of his racing mower during the Noon Thunder, where cars were encouraged to rev their engines simultaneously.
"Pinky can get pretty loud," Graves said with a smile.
Following their appearance at the Oktoberfest in downtown Avon Park, the drivers will adjourn to the MowerPlex for tech inspection and practice laps in preparation for the second race of the NASGRASS season.
In addition to the racing action, which draws participants from Lakeland to Naples, the first autograph session of the year will be held. That will come at halftime, when drivers will park their mowers on the front stretch pose for pictures and meet the fans.
The gates will open Saturday evening at 5 p.m., with the heat races to commence at 6. Admission id $5 for adults.
More information is available at the group's website at www.mowerplex.com or their Facebook page at AP Mowerplex.
