Warner, Remick skip AP forum
By PHIL ATTINGER
AVON PARK -- Tuesday's candidate forum became a one-sided affair thanks to the fact that half of the candidates were not there.
As of press time Tuesday, Greg "Bubba" Warner, running for mayor, said he would not be able to attend. Likewise, Jonathan Remick, running for the seat currently held by Councilman Parke Sutherland, said he had an obligation with a local youth group Tuesday night.
Each man separately said they had received calls from the forum's organizers at least a month ago. However, they each said by the time they heard back from the group last Friday, that date was no longer open.
The Highlands County NAACP and the League of United Latin American Citizens Council 7203 had planned Tuesday's event to be a two-hour question-and-answer session similar to the one run on Oct. 15 by the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce and set for the same location: The Avon Park Community Center, 310 W. Main St.
Dora Smith, president of Highlands LULAC, said she first came up with the idea toward the end of September after a conversation with Aljoe Hinson, president of Highlands NAACP.
So she called the candidates, and gave them the date, time and location.
"They all said great, so I moved forward and they all went along with it," Smith said.
However, Tina Warner, Greg Warner's wife and campaign manager, said they had heard about a date approximately a month ago, but not a time and place. By the time they had heard Friday from forum organizers, her husband already had a meeting scheduled out of town.
Remick said in an email Tuesday morning that in addition to learning about it late, he had also confused Tuesday's forum with the chamber's forum on Oct. 15. As a result, he had a schedule conflict with the York Rite and DeMolay Youth Organization meeting.
Smith said she had checked with him last Friday and "it seemed a go," but when she checked with him on Saturday, he said he would not be going because the discussion would be "two against one."
Smith said it's possible that if she had contacted them earlier, they might have been able to hold the date.
"I take full responsibility for that," she said.
Still, she said that if she failed at communications, she wishes candidates they would have communicated with her.
"It's almost like a slap in the face to us," Smith said.
As of Monday, they still expected to have Sutherland and Mayor Sharon Schuler available to take questions and explain their platforms.
Sutherland said he had blocked off that evening when he was first told about it at least two weeks ago.
"All I can tell you is I'm going to be there," Sutherland said Tuesday prior to the forum.
Schuler said everyone was checked for dates before the chamber event. When she got the call, everyone was called and told everyone was good with the date, she said.
"If there are conflicts it's not because they weren't aware of it at the early stage," Schuler said. "I'm surprised that there are conflicts."
While Remick apologized for missing the forum, he said he planned to visit the Southside community barbecue from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday and meet with community members there.
Tina Warner said Greg Warner also planned to attend the barbecue, scheduled to take place in the "Triangle Park" traffic island bordered by Tulane Drive and South Verona Avenue in the Southside neighborhood.
Election this year is set for Nov. 5.
Good ole boys? (by: too much - 10/25/2013)

The Bubba card (by: 'nuff said - 10/24/2013)
The Bubba card arriveth at my door today. I must admit it made me look, but then I started to laugh. Now I am convinced I am voting for Schuler. Sutherland has my vote too.
oh (by: afraid of delon - 10/24/2013)
Ok masta, don't fire me, I'll vote for sitherland.
Two Races of People (by: Blindman~ - 10/24/2013)
There are only two races of people on this planet... the intelligent and the stupid. Just look at Bubba & Jonathan offering their lame excuses for not meeting with the most politically connected people of the NAACP & LULAC. Bubba actually thinks he can bypass the astute representatives of the community, worm his way into the southside with a food tray, and work his mojo on the people. Should Warner & Remick miraculously appear just remember, a vote is worth so much more than a free meal. May the food be blessed to the nourishment of your bodies as you give thanks to the Lord.

This entire ordeal with Bubba and Remick is making me sick, gag me with a spoon
bubba (by: just looking - 10/23/2013)
Is bubba the remick puppeteer?
(by: Enough already - 10/23/2013)
No sandwich is gonna buy my vote for some cop name bubba to be mayor
And they are running for council? (by: Been here - 10/23/2013)
If you set a date then the time and place don't much matter if you know its going to be in the evening anyway.
Slap in the face (by: Passing this on - 10/23/2013)
No show= lack of confidence.
Blindman (by: Jim Barnard - 10/23/2013)
You may be blind, but you are a straight shooter and hit the target. They want to make a difference, but they do not show up for city council meetings either. Ask them how many in the last 12 months and the answer speaks for itself. Enjoy the bar-b- q.
Blindboy (by: si - 10/23/2013)
Did you really get all of that out of this article? You appear a little bias. I'm sure your not, however you sound as though you drank to much kool aid.
The Blame Game! (by: K Parker - 10/23/2013)
So Bubba let's his wife "Tina" blame Dora Smith for him not showing up and Remick said he was confused but then he blames Bubba. If this is any indication of their future leadership, we are definitely voting for Schuler & Sutherland.
(by: Sighs - 10/23/2013)
Warner has a habit of not showing up for meetings to answer questions and now Remick is doing it too!
Blindman (by: Disturbed - 10/23/2013)
Having King Warner sounds a lot better than El Jeffe Deleon and his minions.
God help Avon Park (by: Blindman~ - 10/23/2013)
Remicks is not a "straight shooter" for he gives two contradictory explanations for not showing. First Remick claims to have a scheduling conflict just like Bubba... then he contradicts himself with the lame excuse... if Bubba can't come he can't either because it would be "two against one". Not only is Remick talking out of both sides of his mouth, but his own words clearly illustrate the Solidarity between Warner & Remick and Remick's dependency on Bubba to "lead the way". With Remick & Anderson "under Warner's wings" on the City Council it would be a catastrophe because this retired cop would not only become Mayor... Bubba would become King of Avon Park.
