SEBRING -- Out of 4,471 registered voters, just 649 cast their vote in the election for city council in Avon Park on Tuesday.

Voters were allowed to cast their ballot for three candidates at the polls before they closed at 7 p.m., and a majority chose Terry Heston, a local contractor, who captured 390 tallies.

Paul D. Miller came in second with 388 votes, just two shy of tying Heston in the small count race.

Nine-year incumbent Brenda Gray took third with 343 votes.

Newcomer Tonya Lynn Marshall got a respectable 293 votes, adding up to 20.72 percent of the overall voters, close behind to the 24.26 Gray captured.

"I did better than I thought I would, and I am happy that I got 293 votes," Marshall said on her way out of the Supervisor of Elections Office.

All apologies Harvey  (by: Rusty Shackleford  -   11/5/2009)

Kindness in my heart? Are you kidding? Anyway, my mother was praised for her work helping veterans get the benefits they deserved during her career with the V.A., and I have a large box of thank you letters written to her from hundreds of veterans. My father is a veteran, also my late uncle, and a cousin was lost in the Vietnam conflict. A member of my extended family whom I never had the honor of meeting was lost recently in Iraq. Am I a veteran? No. A recruiter tried diligently to enlist me at age 18, and my father, an honorably discharged Marine that served during Vietnam talked me out of it. Anything dedicated to veterans is a wonderful, respectful gesture. Unfortunately, all of that doesn't change the fact that Krap Nova sucks. My point was simple, and you have "piggybacked" a political standpoint upon your response. By the way, yes I'm taking my meds too. Too bad they do not provide me with the same rose colored glasses yours do. Since you seem to have overcame the obstacle of HIPAA and associated me with a certain medication by name, wrong one by the way, but good first guess I must hand you, please share with the group what the heck you are taking that makes such an armpit like Krap Nova so "beautiful". Whatever it is, it must put you in a nice warm fuzzy place disassociated from the mayhem surrounding you. Please share with the group the medicinal name assigned to this drug so that we can consult our doctors. Sounds like we all need a big dose. Don't hate me Harvey, I'm just your garden variety realist, I'm sure you are a great person from whom I could learn much from, but once again, Krap Nova is not beautiful by any means. Anyone that agrees it is "beautiful" has a very distorted concept of the word, or maybe they have just never seen better. Sad isn't it?

Rusty, yes I am taking my meds, how about you. Sounds like the Xanax isn't working. Why so hateful? Have you looked at the result of all the hard work done to the mall? It is beautiful, especially the block dedicated to Veterans. Being a Veteran myself, I am proud to live in a city that honors it's citizens that served the country. Are you a Veteran?, did you fight for our freedom?? If you are, you would think it's beautiful also. Try a little kindness in your heart, you'll feel better. Harvey

Couldn't agree more Jim. Sad but true. My motto is: Don't complain if you don't vote; you don't really have a leg to stand on then.

13% turnout, I hope we dont see anymore articles published in either the Newssun or Highlands Today about the problems in Avon Park. If with all there problems the last year and you can only get 649 people out to vote, the rest of us here in Highlands County should not be subjected to reading about there problems. They dont deserve our time to even hear about what goes on up there, this is really bad when the you get more people to go to a city council meeting and gripe than turn out to vote. This is Avon PArks problem in a nutshell, The residents are just down right lazy. One can just drive through the city and look at most of the houses that dont own lawn mowers or know how to start them, paint there homes and god forbid that the blue tarps only last 5 years on most peoples roofs. I just dont want to hear about there water, cop and other problems because they dont care enough themseles to even vote.
