SEBRING -- Alumni, friends and family are waiting in anticipation for the 2012 E.O. Douglass High School Reunion. The alumni foundation has been working hard throughout the year to bring together a memorable and special reunion that will capture the essence of the former segregated school.
The E.O. Douglass High School Reunion will kick off Friday, Dec. 21 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 23.
Since its closing after integration in 1967, E.O. Douglass has become a pinnacle part of the Highlands County School District's history.
Graduate and former student Robert Saffold is one of the many hands putting together this year's celebration and welcomes the many former students and alumni from his alma mater.
"This county will be invaded with former students, teachers, employees and other school officials," said Saffold.
The bi-annual reunion will be held this year at the Chateau Élan Hotel at the Sebring International Raceway.
"The first event ceremony will be the unveiling of the E.O. Douglass monument," Saffold said.
The monument has been constructed and designed under the watchful eye of many former students and current school board employees. It will be placed on the campus underneath the big oak tree that Saffold describes as "the social spot" where many students gathered for lunch, fun and socializing.
Other activities include golfing tournaments, picnics, dance parties, church services and a reunion dinner.
The E.O. Douglass Reunion celebration souvenir book will help to capture the many memories and faces that have become a part of Highlands County's rich history.
"We currently have 100 RSVPs for the reunion. We are sure there are going to be a lot more. It's going to be a great time and a wonderful reunion," said Saffold.
Businesses and individuals in the community may advertise and contribute their business to the booklet and all the alumni near and far. Donations and contributions are always accepted.
