Fees for Highway Park project waived
By CHRISTOPHER TUFFLEY
HIGHWAY PARK -- County commissioners voted 3-2 Tuesday to allow the Highway Park Neighborhood Preservation and Enhancement District Council application fee waivers totaling $1,375. The organization is renovating an abandoned house at 106 Washington Street and turning it into a community resource center.
What made the decision difficult for the commission is that, except for one instance when the county was rectifying its own error, it has never waived fees for anyone else.
Commissioners Don Elwell and Ron Handley were concerned that once one exception is made there will be a tidal wave of similar requests.
"I hate to open up a can of worms," Handley said.
Chairman Jack Richie had a different perspective.
"Highway Park has stepped up to the plate," he said. "These are people who have put in a lot of sweat equity and are trying to help themselves. We've got to help our neighbors and encourage people in our communities."
Evelyn Colon, the executive director of the council, said the community is coming together with a new sense of hope and possibility. "We already have the funds for (the) outside. We are making sure we can afford it. The community is involved."
Colon said the small house would be used for meetings and workshops of all kinds. It is not to be a recreational center, but the heart of the community.
"I personally am going to work for this," said Richie. "Highway Park is part of my district and I'm proud of them. This building is extremely important. It's a banner, an accomplishment that people can see."
Elwell, while voting against the waiver, made it clear he admires the efforts being made in Highway Park and offered his services to help with fundraising.

Commissioners Don Elwell and Ron Handley are right this is not right .The Commissioners would not give the lady in sebring a waiver to keep her wall up and it had been there for years now that they have been given that this i hope and think everyone should have one.And if they don't Sue......Time to STOP them from stepping on OUR civil rights..

Praise the Lord! You all are doing the right thing. God & the commission are helping those who are helping themselves.
