Confederate soldiers in Bowling Green cemetery to be honored

BOWLING GREEN -- The members of the the Captain F.A. Hendry Camp No. 1284, Sebring, and The Confederate Cow Cavalry Camp No. 2181, Arcadia Sons of Confederate Veterans with the assistance of the Capt. John W. Whidden No. 2501 UDC Of Lake Placid, will be honoring the following Confederate soldiers buried in Bereah Cemetery in Bowling Green with a Southern Cross of Honor at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 13.
This marker is a way to give the survivors and families of the deceased soldiers who fought for the Confederacy a medal to honor their service and remember the heritage of their families. The solders to be honored are:
-- Pvt. Elias Johnson, 1st FL Regt. Inf., Hawkins Co.
-- Pvt. Thomas A. Pollard, Co. K 4th Regt. Inf., Capt. John Lesley's Co.
-- Pvt. Henry R. Hill, Co. E 7th Fl Regt., Capt W.S. Blount's Co.
-- Pvt. John B. Gunter, Co. B 7th Fl Regt. Inf., Capt J.W. Whidden's Co.
-- Cpl. Bryant R. Welch, Co. H 9th Fl Regt. Capt. A. Stewart's Co
Those that would like to attend this ceremony are welcome. Please bring your own chair. These men and their descendants have contributed much to DeSoto and Hardee counties and all of South Florida.
