LAKE PLACID -- A Lake Placid man was shot in the right foot after reportedly crashing a wedding reception in Lake Placid on Saturday.
According to Highlands County Sheriff's Office reports, the large reception was being held at the home of 42-year-old Francisco Oliveros-Alvarez at 207 St. Lucie Street. Sometime after 10 p.m., deputies say, a disturbance at the party led to the shooting of 25-year-old Jose Moreno.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they reported that Oliveros-Alvarez walked out into the roadway in front of his residence and was taken into custody. He was searched, and a five-shot .22-caliber pistol was found in his pocket. The gun contained four live rounds in the magazine and one spent round in the chamber. He was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and taken to the Highlands County Jail.
During an interview at the county jail, Oliveros-Alvarez, who was reportedly under the influence of alchohol, allegedly told deputies that he was trying to run off four uninvited guests from the reception after they began making trouble. Oliveros-Alvarez told deputies that the four were "proclaimed gang members," the report said.
During the confrontation, Oliveros-Alvarez told deputies he pulled out his pistol and fired one round into the ground. He said he wasn't aware that the shot had hit anyone.
Oliveros-Alvarez was also charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and using a firearm under the influence of alcohol. He was being held Monday on $6,250 bail.
