Prescribed burns to take place at Preserve

Special to the News-Sun

SEBRING - Preparations are being made for prescribed burning at the Sun 'N Lake Preserve at the end of Sun 'N Lake Boulevard.

A prescribed burn took place at the northern end of the Preserve on Jan. 23. Two additional prescribed burns are scheduled between Feb. 4-15. The scheduling and performing of these burns is dependent on weather and moisture conditions.

All of the prescribed burns will be north of gate 6. Signage will be posted at gates 4, 5, 6 and 7 as well as at the main entrance kiosk informing visitors when the burn is in progress. For safety, do not enter the Preserve while the burn is in progress.

An easterly wind is expected and smoke should not hamper residents in the area.

The Sun 'N Lake Preserve is a 1,350-acre site composed of a variety of plant communities. Many of the areas within the Preserve are fire dependent, which means they need occasional fire to survive and reproduce. In addition, prescribed fire reduces the threat of wildfire by reducing fuels that have built up on the forest floor.
