ANDREW JACKSON
Andrew Betts Jackson of Sebring, Fla., age 77, passed on Jan. 29, 2013 at Shands at University of Florida in Gainesville. Andy was born in Sebring, Fla. on Jan. 6, 1936 at Dr. Weems Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Burke Jackson and Ruby Ione Rivers Jackson.
Andy is survived by his loving wife, Ida Dorman Jackson; sons, Nathaniel Burke Jackson, and wife Diana, of Alamogordo, N.M., and Randall Kevin Jackson and Carolyn of Mineola, Texas; daughters, Crystal Leigh Jackson of Gainesville, Fla., and Amber Lynn Jackson of Deland, Fla.; sisters, Sarah Virginia (Jackson) Thomas and brother-in-law, Dr. Gerald Monroe Thomas of Athens, Ga., and their children, Gerald M. Thomas and wife, Gail; Dr. Stuart J. Thomas and wife, Sharon; Sue Thomas Townsend and husband, Whit; sister, Patricia Ione (Jackson) Lukens and brother-in-law, Samuel, and their children, Pricilla Lukens; Carol Lukens McFadden and husband James, and Mark Lukens and wife Pat; sister-in-law Evelyn Sapp and husband Gerald "Gator", Palmdale, Fla.; brother-in-law, Dr. John Dorman and wife Barbara, Gainesville, Fla.; brother-in-law Charles Dorman and wife Kim, Sebring, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Sebring High School in 1954 and a graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in Economics and Juris Law. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1964, and practiced law in Highlands County for nearly 50 years. While attending the University of Florida, Andy played baseball for the Gators and served two terms as president of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Andy proudly served in the United States Army including service at the Pentagon and in the Far East theatre stationed at Camp Zama, Japan, and a member of the U.S. Far East Champs Baseball Team.
Andy was the first elected Republican in Highlands County serving as county commissioner, District 4, later serving District 3. He served as Highlands County Republican State Committeeman, 1980 -1996.
Some of his community activities in public service include past President Highlands County Cattlemen's Association, board of directors Lake Placid and Sebring chambers of commerce, founding member of Highlands County Lay Education Committee, coached youth baseball, Lake Placid Jaycees, and lifelong member First Baptist Church, Sebring, Fla.
