Special to the News-Sun
AVON PARK - The Women of Ireland bring their talent and energy to the South Florida State College Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18 in the SFSC Theatre for the Performing Arts, Highlands Campus.
Women of Ireland comprises a 20-member company performing alongside other world-class musicians, singers, and dancers. The 2013 North American Tour encompasses vocalists Fiona, Naomi, and Evangeline O'Neill together with dancer Kelly McDonnell and sensational fiddler Niamh Gallagher.
The full-scale stage production produced in Ireland has been described as "mesmerizing" by the Irish Examiner and the talent of the cast as "superhuman at times - gripping" by the Sarasota Herald Tribune. The name Women of Ireland refers to a piece of music bearing the same name and known in the Irish language as "Mn·a hEireann," which translates as "Women of Ireland."
This performance is sponsored by Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, Highlands Independent Bank, and Dr. Richard and Elina Campbell.
Individual tickets for the Women of Ireland range in price from $36 to $43. They are available for purchase online at www.performances.southflorida.edu or at the SFSC Box Office, 784-7178. SFSC Box Office hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and is in the front of the SFSC Theatre for the Performing Arts, 600 W. College Drive. On Facebook visit http://www.facebook.com/sfscperformingarts.
An hour prior to the performance, audience members can visit the Sand and Sea exhibition at the SFSC Museum of Florida Art and Culture (SFSC MOFAC). Sand and Sea features works inspired by shells and sea forms - paintings by John Bunker, sculpture by Rick Crawford, and tools by Terry Powell. From 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 SFSC MOFAC will present its Third Thursday program titled "Going Spiral: Art, Culture, and Science." It will discuss the inspiration of shells and sea forms on art and design throughout history.
SFSC MOFAC is open to the public from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, one hour prior to each Artist and Matinee Series performance, and by appointment for group tours.
