Blueberry archaeologist to speak at SFSC

AVON PARK - The Kissimmee Valley Archaeological and Historical Conservancy is sponsoring a presentation by Dr. David Butler, principle investigator at the Blueberry site in Highlands County. Butler will present an overview of current research at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in Building G, Room 101, SFSC Highlands Campus. The public is invited at no cost.

Butler will talk about the focus on his work at the Blueberry site since 2005. His presentation will highlight the significant accomplishments of the Phase I Cultural Resource Assessment (2005-2008) on file with the Bureau of Archaeological Research in Tallahassee and the ongoing Phase II Cultural Resource Assessment (2009-2013).

Butler's research design has produced a plethora of educational summaries and analytical reports. His accomplishments include nearly 30 articles focusing on progress at the site, nine professional archaeological conference presentations detailing analysis of findings, lab management, and analysis protocol specific to the site as well as detailed studies of significant artifacts and artifact categories at the site such as individual copper artifacts, lithics, ceramics, bone tools, and detailed analysis of hearth and post-mold features.

Butler is a Registered Professional Archaeologist with 15 years of professional archaeological experience in the state of Florida. He attended graduate school at the University of South Florida where he earned a master's degree in public archaeology in 2001 and his doctorate degree in 2007. He has been a crew member and a supervisor in all phases of research in the Cultural Resource Management industry including Phase I, II, and III Archaeological Surveys, artifact analysis, report writing, research design, probability modeling, archaeological monitoring and the documentation and description of historic structures.

Butler taught courses in anthropology and archaeology at the college level from 2001-2009. Since 2009, he has applied his anthropological background toward the analysis of online cultural marketing as a full-time professor in the Full Sail University Internet Marketing Master of Science Program in Winter Park.
