LAKE PLACID -- Lake Placid now has its 45th wall mural. To reflect the beauty of the area's 27 lakes, residents of Camp Florida Resort just completed a 12-by-20-foot wall mural in the pool and fitness center. "Snowbird" artists Jeanne Sineath, Peggy White, Kaye Houston, Barb Snyder and Dawn Heinbach, long-time residents of Camp Florida, created the beautiful landscape of Lake Grassy highlighting its wildlife, floral beauty and recreational activities.
The project is part of a three-year effort by the fitness and activities committee to replace the old exercise equipment and refurbish the aging recreation building. As committee chair Diane Lucey put it, "We love the murals that tell stories of the history and beauty of the Lake Placid area. There's nothing like it anywhere. We want our little paradise of Camp Florida to reflect the things that make this place so special. We've got so much talent in the park ... painting a mural was the perfect thing to do."
The activities of Camp Florida are managed by the CFR board of directors. In the past few years, board members have approved the upgrading of almost all of the recreational facilities available to its residents. Current members are Peg Vedder, Bruce Ridley, Peg Murray, Diane Snyder and Mike Semans.
A recognition ceremony was recently held at the pool and fitness center. Lucey thanked the board for its approval of the project and recognized the artists with flowers and a plaque acknowledging them for their creative efforts. Special thanks went to Harriet and Bob Porter, coordinators of the Lake Placid Mural Society. Ken Keller, emcee of the event, thanked members of the fitness center committee - Diane Lucey, Wayne and Kaye Houston, Wayne Newton, Bob Manning, Tom and Mary Nell Panyard and Jim Lucey - for their commitment to the project over the past years.
