AVON PARK - At the annual banquet of the Historical Society of Avon Park, set for Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Hotel Jacaranda, you'll find the menu includes "Then & Now." This PowerPoint presentation by James Deal, society board member and museum volunteer, features historic and current photos of many of the Main Street area buildings, from the way they looked then to the way they look today.
"We've found this is a good way to present local history to groups of all ages," Deal said. "Our presentation might also spark some interest in creating real downtown walking tours, like the one we put together in late 2011," he added, referring to the walking tour co-sponsored by the society and the Avon Park Community Redevelopment Agency.
Deal, a Wauchula native now living in Avon Park, enjoys an ever-expanding role at the museum, serving as tour guide, showing the PowerPoint program, and overseeing some of the dining car operations. He maintains the Facebook page for the Depot Museum and is the editor of the upcoming quarterly newsletter for the historical society, says Museum Director Elaine Levey.
As usual, the banquet agenda includes election of board members.
Tickets for the banquet are $25 and are available at the Hotel Jacaranda and the Depot Museum. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Deadline for buying tickets is Thursday, Feb. 21. A social hour kicks off at 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 7.
For more information, call the museum at 453-3525 or call Levey at 385-8618.
