SEBRING - On Feb. 19, the 14th annual Tanglewood Residents' Cancer Benefit wrapped up with a gala event in the Tanglewood clubhouse. At the end of the day, it was announced that this year's Cancer Benefit had raised $54,055.10, bringing the total contributed for cancer research to $430,000.
More than 500 residents danced to the music of D.J. Bob Weed, ate Bob Evans' bacon/turkey wraps and super sundaes prepared by Tanglewood's Red Hat groups. They also quaffed free liquid refreshments provided by Hometown America. Partcipants bought tickets for three 50/50 draws, 35 raffle prizes and 37 door prizes as well as five premium prize packages. The real winners were cancer patients everywhere who will benefit from new cancer research.
The lucky 50/50 winners were Joyce Houck, Terry Athorn and Eric Hurst.
The premium prize packages (prize donors shown in brackets) were taken home by:
- Ambrose Brooker - Kindle Fire (Hometown America), John Madeiros Bracelet (Steve & Company), $100 Gift Certificate (Turner Furniture)
- Carol and Don Phelps - Gift Basket and Mammogram (Florida Hospital), Kindle Fire (Hometown America), Lady's Cancer Watch
- Barbara Mears - Colonoscopy (Dr. Vinod Thakkar & Dr. Pankaj Patel) and $100 Gift Basket.
- Don and Carol Phelps - Galaxy 2 - 7-inch Tab (Tanglewood Computer Club), Colonoscopy (Dr. Vinod Thakkar & Dr. Pankaj Patel)
- Bev Race - $500 Lot Rent (Hometown America)
This was the last of a series of events to raise funds for cancer research. Other events included: gold sale, Highlands Little Theatre special presentation of "Auntie Mame", Walk in the Park, Ride for the Cure, variety show, Heartland National Bank lasagna dinner, Bill Jarrett Ford's Drive for the Cure, Golf Fore a Cure, luminary display, Cancer Bingo plus petanque, tennis and shuffleboard tournaments.
