AVON PARK -- The Avon Park Friends of the Library will be spending the entire week of Oct. 21-27 celebrating its Friends of the Library group as part of the National Friends of Libraries Week.
The Friends of the Avon Park Library have donated more than $30,000 to the library for building renovation and provision of computers, books, audiovisuals and magazines. In 2012, the Friends endowed a Literature scholarship for use by an Avon Park student attending South Florida State College.
Lucy Derkman, a Friend for more than 20 years and an ex-president, said, "I love libraries, I love books and I enjoy being a Friend. Avon Park's new librarian, Mary Beth Isaacson, is very supportive of our group of dedicated volunteers."
Another ex-president and current treasurer Ann Hartsfield said, "You know, Avon Park residents of all socioeconomic status use our library. They come here to use the print collection, consisting of the latest best sellers, as well as non-fiction books for research. Patrons use the computers for school work, researching for job opportunities and email."
Contact the Avon Park Public Library at 452-3803 or visit the Friends Used Bookstore in the library. Look for the Friends sign hanging by the sidewalk, "Yes, We're Open." The library is at 100 N. Museum Ave.
