AVON PARK - At approximately 11:50 a.m. Friday, Highlands County Sheriff's Office Central Dispatch received a call of a burglary in progress at 598 E. Lakeview Drive, within the city limits of Avon Park. Sheriff's deputies arrived on scene within five minutes of the call and a perimeter was established in the area.
Acting on information provided by neighbors, suspect descriptions were obtained and Deputy Jake Riley and his K-9 partner Wyatt began a track.
The subjects ran in the direction of the Ridgedale Apartments. Additional deputies responded, resulting in a total of 11 deputies, two criminal investigations detectives and one crime scene detective who were involved. As a result, two subjects were taken into custody.
Rakeem Bates, 16, of Avon Park was arrested and charged with burglary of a dwelling (felony) and resisting arrest without violence (misdemeanor). Kayla Annmarie Starks, 17, of Sebring was charged with burglary of a dwelling (felony).
Sheriff Susan Benton complimented the deputies for their quick response and teamwork in this burglary call.
"The consolidated response made the difference in the case; and the result is evident," she said.
