AVON PARK - South Florida Community College's Museum of Florida Art and Culture (MOFAC) presents its second exhibit of the 2009-10 season, Silver Springs: The Underwater Photography of Bruce Mozert. The exhibit is on view Nov. 4-Dec. 3.
Mozert helped establish Silver Springs as Florida's premier tourist attraction in the 1940s through the 1970s with his underwater kitsch photography.
His photographs feature scenes of people doing daily activities including talking on the phone, playing golf, and reading the newspaper while underwater.
In his May 2008 article for Smithsonian magazine, Gary Monroe stated that Mozert pioneered underwater photography by creating waterproof housings for his camera and developing methods to create special effects underwater such as using Alka-Seltzer to create champagne bubbles and canned condensed milk to simulate rising smoke.
Mozert published a calendar of his photographs in 2004 and continues to work in his studio near Silver Springs today.
Mozert will speak about his personal experiences with his underwater photography along with Monroe, who authored of the book "Silver Springs: The Underwater Photography of Bruce Mozert," during SFCC MOFAC's Third Thursday program on Nov. 19.
The exhibit is presented in cooperation with the Appleton Museum of Art and is co-sponsored by the SFCC foundation, Inc.
A selection from the SFCC Highwayman Collection will also be on view.
SFCC MOFAC is open to the public from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, one hour prior to each Artist and Matinee Series performance and by appointment for group tours.
