SEBRING — Sheriff Susan Benton was the biggest winner in Highlands County Tuesday night, re-elected to a third term with 83 percent of the vote.
Penny Ogg was elected Supervisor of Elections with 68 percent of the vote.
Incumbent County Commissioner Greg Harris won re-election with 67 percent of the vote; incumbent County Commissioner Ron Handley won with 58 percent of the vote and Jim Brooks won the commission’s District 1 seat with 63 percent of the vote.
Wally Cox was re-elected in a closer race against Becky Fleck. Cox received 57 percent of the vote, Fleck 43 percent.
Avon Park will see a new face on the city council. Garrett Anderson drew the second largest number of votes, 1,170; Brenda Gray was the top vote getter, with 1,526; Terry Heston was re-elected with 1,138 votes. Incumbent councilor Paul Miller drew the fewest votes, 883.
Jacqueline Bailey and Audrey Vickers were elected to the Soil & Water Conservation district with 58 and 54 percent of the vote respectively.
Dave Halbig and Richard K. Hulbert were elected to the Sun ’N Lakes Improvement District board.
State races are still undecided as the state districts encompass more than Highlands County.
At 8 p.m., with all 25 county precincts reporting, Republican candidate for State Representative in istrict 56, Gary Pigman led Democrat Crystal Drake 58 to 42 percent. That lead may dwindle when the other counties votes are added to the total.
Republican
Bill Galvano had a comfortable out-polled Democrat Paula House, 61 to 39 percent in the county. Republican Denise Grimsley held a commanding lead in the county over Democrat Stacy Anderson McCland in the State Senate District 21.
Republican Congressman Tom Rooney the county handily, 66 to 34 percent.
Highlands County voting totals as of 8 p.m. with 25 of 25 precincts reporting.
