LAKE PLACID -- Police Chief Phil Williams warns Lake Placid area merchants to be alert for counterfeit $100 bills. Two were passed in town stores Friday, Nov. 30.
"The bills looked pretty good," Williams said. "They passed the merchant's pen test."
The bills, however, do have a flaw -- both belonged to the 1985 series and had identical serial numbers. Williams recommends posting the numbers on cash registers. Look for B02609463B.
Williams added that in the past his department kept local merchants informed about just this kind of situation through notification email and fax lists.
He is reinstating that program. Merchants who want to be on the notification list should contact the Lake Placid police department.

The police department switchboard and office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every week day, except for holidays.
Should a business discover they've received a counterfeit bill after hours call the Lake Placid number. The call will be routed to the Sheriff's central dispatch, but the dispatcher will contact the Lake Placid police, who will respond to the call.
The case is currently under investigation. The police ask anyone with information to call 699-3757.
