AVON PARK -- Laura Wade, executive director of the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce, notified chamber members Wednesday afternoon that she is stepping down as of Jan. 4.
Wade is leaving to become the new director of Career Services at Webber International University.
"It's a very exciting job that came to me," Wade said Wednesday. "I am sad to be leaving so soon, but the move had to be made in between semesters.
"I missed working with students and getting to teach, and it seemed like the chamber wasn't quite the right fit."
Wade said she learned while at the chamber. Not just the nuts and bolts of business, but about Avon Park itself.
"I live in Avon Park," Wade said, "and I've always liked living here, but I didn't fall in love with the town until I went to the chamber and worked with the people there. I learned so much and was able to develop relationships. I got to know the Historical Society, and through it, discover things I never knew before."
As an example, she talked about the Jordan family, of Jordan & Son Jeweler, who have been in business in Avon Park closing in on 93 years now.
In her letter of resignation Wade wrote, "I would like to thank the board of directors for all their support, encouragement and guidance during this past year. I know the coming years will be prosperous and exciting."
Julia Diaz-Nichols, president of the chamber, said in a press release, "We are sorry Laura is leaving so soon. She has been a positive asset to the chamber this past year and we wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors."
She added that the chamber will be advertising for the director's position as soon as possible.
