SEBRING - The Sebring girl's soccer season drew to a close on Tuesday night in the District 13- 3A Tournament after a hard-fought match against the Winter Haven Blue Devils.
The Streaks battled to narrow 2-1 loss at Winter Haven, a dramatic improvement over 6-2 and 3-0 losses to the top seed during the regular season.
The Streaks were fresh off of a big win on Monday night in their district opener against Auburndale, where they walked away with a thrilling, 2-1 victory in overtime
Unfortunately the tables turned for them on Tuesday night.
The Streaks, however, didn't go down without a fight.
"It was a close game," said junior Mariana Becker. "We were tied 1-1 until they scored in the last few minutes, unfortunately."
Sebring's goal was scored by powerhouse sophomore Haylee Peters, who has scored a number of goals for the Streaks throughout the season.
The district win on Monday night coupled with a strong performance on Tuesday shows that Sebring will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons.
For while they say good bye to seniors Destiny McCartney, Kristina Williams, Heather Bloemsma, Holly Scherlacher, Taryn O'Bannon, Lyndsey Reck and Ashley Longabaugh, all of whom made great contributions to the program, their leadership and example will be followed by the many underclassmen moving forward for first-year head coach Richie Birdsall.
And though the season is over, club soccer is on the agenda for many as they prepare to take another step up in the district standings next year.
They've already put themselves on the other teams' radar.
"It was a great season," Becker said. "They know we're a big threat next season now."
