Special to the News-Sun

SEBRING - The VFW 4300 Cubs prevailed in the Sebring 60s Softball playoffs Monday, by beating the Fairmount Services Angels

in the opening game with a thrilling comeback, 17-16.

The Angels, who were led by Jim Morgan, Don Cunningham, Steve Blazing and pitcher JC Brown, took a 16-13 lead into the last inning.

But clutch, two-out hits by Ray Trudell (three hits, double), Gene Phillips (two hits, home run) and Don Dobbert (three hits) set the table for the game-winning hit that scored Gene "The Rabbit" Phillips all the way from first.

John Buja (home run) and Roger Gasperlin had three hits each.

Dan Webb was the winning pitcher.

In the championship game the VFW 4300 Cubs kept the hitting going with a 13-7 win over the second-place Independent White Sox.

The Cubs were lead by Dan Webb, Don Dobbert and Gary Tankersley, with three hits each.

Bill Scrase added a triple and home run to the attack.

John Kloet was the winning pitcher.

The White Sox leaders were John Jeffries, Gary Steeves, Dick Ostretch and Tom McNally, all with two hits.

With the 2013 season complete, the league will start drafting in December for the 2014 season and hope to have six teams.
