SEBRING - The Seventy and Over Softball League ended with fairly low final scores Tuesday, January 29 at the Highlands County Complex Center in Sebring.
The weather was not to blame, as it was a beautiful calm day.
Royal Palms and Buttonwood Bay played a back and forth game through six innings, ending with the Palms on top with a 12-9 win.
This was the highest scoring game of the day.
Bobby Floodine belted out a three-run homer for Royal Palms. Kyle Saunders went 2-4 with two doubles.
Charlie Quinn, the winning pitcher, was 2-for-3 and Ray Concepcion had 2-for-4.
For Buttonwood Bay the Richardson brothers contributed their share with Earl going 3-for-3, Nelson had 2-3 including a double and Fred belted out a triple for the team.
VFW4300 won their game with Highlands Independent Bank due to a few too many walks given to their batters in the seventh inning.
The final score was 10-5.
VFW's Chuck Fluharty went 2-for-3 including a double.
John Kloet, winning pitcher, had 2-for-3 and Cal Bready and Bob Roth each had three hits.
Highlands Independent Bank's Woody Woodward had a home run included in his 3-for-4 times at bat.
Don Cunningham was 4-for-4 including a triple.
Fred Krieg went 2-for-3 and seven other batters had one hit each.
Silent Salesman played Allstate Insurance Company, the other team at 3-3 in the standings, hoping to move up to over the .500 mark.
As it turned out, Allstate came to play and the Salesman came to watch.
Allstate's Jerry Kuffman had two home runs in his 4-for-4 times at bat.
Dick Ostrich was 3-for-4, Marvin Knutilla went 2-for-3 and having 2-for-4 at the plate were Eddie Lindberg and Galo Gonzalez.
After falling behind 3-0 after three innings, it was obvious Allstate's pitcher, Rudy Pribble, had the Salesman in the palm of his hand.
Allstate went on to win 12-1 with the Salesman only collecting 10 hits.
Norm Grubbs had 2-for-3 including a triple.
Bill Todd and Victor Rodriquez each had 2-for-3.
On Thursday four teams played.
VFW4300 overpowered Buttonwood Bay with a 25-7 victory.
Bob Fulcher went 4-for-4 including a triple.
Cal Bready was 4-for-4.
Chuck Fluharty had a two base hit in his 3-for-4 times at bat.
Belting out 3-for-4 hits were Dennis Birkholz, winning pitcher John Kloet, Spider McMinn, Jerry Murphy and Bob Ross.
Bottonwood Bay Rebels were led by John Degnen batting 3-for-3 with a double.
Tom "Moose" Morrissette and Bob Wood each included a triple in their 2-for-3 trips to the plate.
Also hitting 2-for-3 for their team were Fred Boyd, Jim Monroe and Earl Richardson.
Highlands Independent Bank avenged an earlier loss to Silent Salesman by easily downing the Salesman 13-6.
For the Bank Bobby Fahnestock had 4-for-4 with a double and triple.
Going 3-for-4, including a double, were Don Cunningham and Gene Phillips.
Don Sheets had 3-for-4 and three other batters managed two hits each.
Silent Salesman started off by scoring three in the first inning, but left most of their runners on base the rest of the way.
Victor Rodriquez ptiched a good game, but did not get the fielding support he usually gets from his defense.
Larry Ambuel connected for a triple for the only extra base hit by the Salesman.
Going 2-for-4 were Ken Crandall and Fred Moore.
Newcomer Cliff Skeans had 3-for-4 and Richie Birkholz had 2-for-2 with two walks for a good day at bat.
Buttonwood Bay takes the prize for the most loyal spectators coming to each game.
The games are played at the Highlands County Sports Complex located behind the Sebring train depot each Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m.
