The nearly seven hour round trip was worth it Saturday night as Avon Park won for the first time since its' Kick Off Classic with a 20-0 win at Hialeah Gardens.

After handling a tough Tenoroc squad on Aug. 24, the Devils had a hard time getting their offense on track in losses to Frostproof, Hardee, Mulberry and LaBelle.

But taking their talents toward South Beach was just the ticket to kick things into gear.

The Devils set the pace with their ground game, totaling 182 yards on 35 carries, and got on the board early when Stephon Godfrey pounded it in from a yard out for a 6-0, first-quarter lead.

Tyler Johnson padded the lead with a one-yard surge in the second, and Damion Braswell took a pass from Ryan Dick for the two-point conversion, putting Avon Park up 14-0 at the half.

The Devil defense, a stalwart force throughout the season, kept making plays with Lacy Turner recording three sacks and Estevinsn Louis and Cam Hicks each recovering fumbles.

Johnson finished the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth to provide for the final margin and make the long bus ride home that much more enjoyable.

Godfrey totaled 85 on 19 carries and Johnson had 73 yards on 11 carries.

Now at 2-4 on the season, Avon Park is back on the road Friday at Clewiston.
