Editor:
I read a letter to the editor today, Friday, 02-01-2013, from a woman about how the chance we, the old me (69), can have a place here in Highlands County to go to for a week or weekend day of activities. The owners will have something for everyone and Highlands needs that. Not only people from the county will enjoy this, but people from all over Florida and even out of state.
This will create jobs, money, an opportunity for people to see our county, spend much needed monies for small business small and large. It might even help the slow housing market, and we all know that is a for sure need. Not only that, it can possibly create new business for the county.
If you read her letter she has it that the county is just for the very few and we have no right to share in all the county has to offer. She used the words "stupid," "ignorant," "integrity." Well I would like to touch on one word for her - "selfish".

She mentioned Gabe White, that he has no concern for the county. If you know Gabe and his family you have to know what he has given back to the people not just here but wherever he is ... in Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Geogia and most of all Florida and Highlands County. And trust me, all who know and meet him are the better for it.
He and his partners will be doing a great thing for the old and young and in between by building The Swamp Hammock. Many many people will they serve, and many will have some good restricted enjoyment right here in Highlands County. It will keep people off the streets, will have people that share the same things in a managed sports complex and that is what it is, a sports complex.
Highlands County has been looking for people to come here. Well this is one very good idea to bring a lot of people here and if you know "mudders," you are talking a family event as well.
I hope that the commission will approve this for the good of all Highlands people and not just one or two families that, in my opinion, are selfish. I promise I will be at that meeting to stand for the people and the county. A yes vote for me and my family that will come from as far away as Ohio and Indiana. Thank you for letting me tell our side of this issue, and to Gabe White and his family, thank you for all you do here. God bless you all.
