SEBRING - It was in 2008 that Yokohama Tire introduced their orange oil tires in dramatic fashion, putting them on competitors in the Patron GT3 series support race.
The result was just as dramatic, with reported better all round performance ranging from handling to reduced wear.
The proprietary formula allowed the company to use less petroleum in the construction of the tire, which has steadily advanced over the years as technology has increased..
On Wednesday, March 15, Yokohama plans to bring a convoy of writers for trade magazines to national publications to the Sebring International Raceway on their newest version of the tire, dubbed the Ascend.
The Ascend, the latest generation of Yokohama's orange oil technology, follows in the footsteps of the company's dB Super E-specª, the world's first orange oil tire introduced in the U.S. market in 2008.
"The Ascend's orange oil technology creates a compound resulting in a perfect balance of extended treadlife, all-season handling and great fuel economy," said Dan King, Yokohama senior vice president of sales and marketing. "All this and a quiet ride, too. Today's drivers can now expect more from a touring tire than ever before - an accomplishment made possible through Yokohama innovation."
Independent test results reveal the Ascend has lower rolling resistance.
For consumers, that could mean a savings of 58 gallons of gas and more than $200 over the life of the tire.
The Ascend falls under Yokohama's new 'BluEarth®' umbrella.
"BluEarth is the name for our global environmental philosophy, which is aimed at creating tires that produce positive improvements socially and environmentally," King said. "The Ascend is our first replacement tire to be recognized as a BluEarth product."
When they arrive at the raceway, the group will get some history on how Yokohama's orange oil tire technology was devised by racing engineers - resulting in the ADVAN ENV-R2.
They then will see a real time demonstration of the product, by watching the GT3 races, as part of the support series action during the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh From Florida.
