James Barnard named to Avon Park's Police Pension Board
By CHRISTOPHER TUFFLEY
AVON PARK -- James Barnard, recent candidate for the city council, was named to the Police Pension Board by Mayor Sharon Schuler Wednesday morning, as is her purview.
Schuler had named former city councilor Doug Eason to sit temporarily on the board in 2012 when negotiations were under way and the city needed representation.
Councilor Garrett Anderson asked why, if Eason were already in the position and everyone was happy with his work, anybody else should be appointed.
Schuler replied that Barnard has shown an interest in serving the Avon Park community.
She pointed out that younger people, and newly interested middle-aged ones, were necessary for the town to thrive over time. "He has done his homework," Schuler said. "And we need more people educated about how the system works."
The council approved Barnard's appointment, 4 to 1. Anderson's was the sole negative vote.
