Customers lament AP Publix's closing

By TREY CHRISTY

AVON PARK -- Customers leaving the Avon Park Publix Saturday were upset, but knew they couldn't do anything about the store closing.

"I'm horrified. Who made this decision? I don't know?" said Jane Stevens of Zolfo Springs.

The store will close permanently at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2.

A low volume of business and the opening of the new Publix store in late October, four and a half miles south in north Sebring's former Albertsons location, were cited as reasons for the closure by Maria Brous, of Publix media relations.

The Avon Park store also had to compete with the new Wal-Mart that opened mid-August and is further north in Avon Park, even closer than the new Sebring Publix.

Stevens lives seven miles off of U.S. 27 on State Road 64, but said she will make the trip into Sebring or another city to shop, but still at a Publix store.

"I will always shop Publix but I prefer the older Southgate center," she said when asked about the massive new Publix in Sebring. "They'll get me one way or another."

Wal-Mart didn't get Debbie George's money, either. She said she doesn't like their meats.

"I've shopped here for 10 years," said the Avon Park Lakes resident about the closing store.

She works in Sebring and plans on shopping at the new Publix on Thursdays on the way home instead of when it's convenient for her.

The Avon Park store employs dozens of local residents who will now have to make the trek to another Publix store or lose their jobs, although Brous said all associates will have an opportunity to transfer to other stores.

According to a customer service employee at the new Publix store in Sebring, the store is not currently hiring. The last hires they made were in December.

Mike Aubrey, assistant manager of the closing store, would not answer any questions, even about the future of his own employment with the company.

When asked if Saturday was a busy day for shopping, as five of the seven checkout lines in the store were open that morning, he said "well, it's Easter," and wouldn't discuss anything further.

Still, the brand certainly seems to have its fans in Avon Park, like resident John Paulitch.

"I wish they would stay open," he said. "I love shopping at Publix and all the little things they do."

There are currently more than 700 Publix stores in Florida, including four that opened in the past month.

An Era Ends  (by: former AP employee Publix  -   4/15/2009)

I think what the most upsetting issue with the AP Publix closing is the customers feel that an "era" is ending abruptly and not only jobs will be lost, and fine workers displaced, but also the great memories and caring! attitude you felt when you walked in the store will be sorely missed! No amount of money saved or smart business trends can replace the sour feeling of losing a warm and caring Publix store where most employees knows you by "first" name. As far as Mr. Aubrey goes, I felt lucky to have called him my manager and thru the bad hurricanes of 2005 he was a pillar of strength and calm to his employees and worried customers. I feel proud to call that my store and I feel sad its disappearing from the AP landscape.

The Facts  (by: Publix Man  -   4/15/2009)

The AP Store was going to close sooner or later it just wasn't profitable. Its not a case of Publix being mean or inconsiderate, it's just business. The new store down the street would love to see you. Also, Mr. Aubrey is a great guy leave him alone.

Closing  (by: Joan  -   4/14/2009)

As another "former Publix associate" and loyal shopper I am very upset by the A.P. closing. I feel the workers are going to draw the "short straw" in this move and not be able to be readily absorbed by the other stores. Publix is not run the way it was when Mr. George was alive, he always looked out for his people and the customers. As for Mr. Aubrey, he was the best manager I worked under. He was loyal to the company and supported his people with integrity and honesty. He and the store will be missed.

Re: Mike Aubrey  (by: former L.P. Publix employee  -   4/14/2009)

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who felt that Mike Aubrey was one of the good managers at Publix. It's sad someone such as Janice Magoon has to still hold something against him. Hopefully Mike Aubrey will be taken care of by the company. And hopefully Janice Magoon will find something in her life so she is not so bitter.

Vote   (by: AP resident  -   4/14/2009)

You want a business to survive, you have to "vote" with your dollars. Plain and simple. I voted, especially for their subs, but it just was not enough.

Mike Aubrey  (by: Amanda - Former Publix Employee  -   4/14/2009)

It is sad that in a time when Avon Park is slowly dying and so many people are going to be displaced (because it is not an affordable option to work in Lake Wales or Winter Haven and they cannot move an entire store full of employees to the three remaining stores in our county) that the focus is Mr. Aubrey and a personal grudge. I worked for Publix for many years in this county, at three different locations. Of all the managers I worked for, many no longer working with Publix because they were "forced into retirement due to poor behavior", Mike was always one of the good guys. If you took the time to get to know him, he is a very kind and intellegent man who worked hard for a company that he was dedicated to. While he may not have been as loud and as out-spoken as some managers, he was not a threat to his employees like some of the others. I hate to see his name brought through the mud. He was and still is one of the best managers I have worked for. I hope that he continues to be sucessful in whatever he does in the future.

huh?  (by: huh?  -   4/14/2009)

ummm, Janice....I believe you meant "former ap publix worker"? Not lake placid.

A.P. Publix Closing  (by: Janice Magoon  -   4/14/2009)

To former Lake Placid employee--Coward I dare you to identify yourself. I very well realize what the deal was with Mike Aubrey and why He didn't say too much but judging from what I read seems he could have been a little more intelligent in his answers to the interviewer. He just never learned the art of doing a lot of talking to say absolutely nothing like the rest of you guys

former ap publix worker   (by: whatever   -   4/13/2009)

uhm now that publix is closing i gues i have the freedom to say that the manager sucked and was really mean and the sandwhich grl at the deli did not wash her hands when she did my sub NASTY!!! not good service she needs to keep in mind she is working in a public area not her home !!! but yeah it is sad that they are closing but good for the people

this is stupid   (by: bella   -   4/13/2009)

i dont think the publix in avon park should close down even though the city kinda sucks due to the fact that there is nothing to do it shouldnt close down because people use the store to go and do quick errands the publiz main company or whatever should keep in mind that THEY ARE BEING VERY VERY INCONSIDERATE because they are thinking about themselves and not the people and thanks to that many people are going to loose there jobs due to this CONFLICT

FYI  (by: Lady  -   4/13/2009)

Hendrick's grocery downtown is another good place to buy meat.

No Choice Shopping  (by: Lady  -   4/13/2009)

Everytime I read about our Publix closing I get upset. Except now I am beginning to get mad. They waited until they got all the money from the winter residents, and then as soon as they headed north; posted the stores closing. Our Winn Dixie is unkept and the cashiers unfriendly. But with the closing of Publix, they will better choice for meats, vegetables and fresh fruit. All Walmarts have horrible ground beef and other beef products, but chicken and pork is good. The fresh vegetable and fruits all depend on what day you go. In Avon Park, you will also be faced with bare shelves. They do not stock this store continually.

To Mrs. Magoon  (by: former L.P. Publix employee  -   4/13/2009)

Mrs. Magoon not sure what your issue is with Mike Aubrey. He was always a fair person to work for. He did not have something to say because he was probably told to not say anything by the corporate office. Can't blame a person for doing what he is told. And in my opinion he is an asset to the company. I worked for him for a few years and he was always one of the best managers to work for. You on the other hand from what I remember was not an asset to the company at all unless you call a bitter cranky cashier an asset.

A. P. Publix Closing  (by: Janice Magoon  -   4/13/2009)

Not surprised Mike Aubrey had nothing to say. He never did rank high on the personality parade. His insecurity was always showing and I used to think that he was afraid of losing his job if he dared to say good morning to his employees. Never understood how he managed to make it up the ladder as far as he did. In my opinion he WAS NOT an asset to the company.

Disappointed  (by: Grumpy  -   4/12/2009)

This store will surely be missed. The Publix in Avon Park is the cleanest store in Avon Park. The store employees are very polite and helpful. Wal-Mart in Avon Park is terrible. Every time you touch something you get shocked...the meat is horrible....and they do not keep enough registers open so you have to stand in line for 30 minutes to get out the door. Anyway, Publix will be missed and I wish they could do something about it not closing.

Very Sad  (by: Christy  -   4/12/2009)

I have shopped at the AP Publix for 8 years now, and I am sad to hear of this news. I have come to know the employees at this store, and they know me. The ladies in the deli saw me before, during and after my youngest child was born, and they spoil him with Boar's Head meats and cheeses almost every week. We tried the new store a couple times, but it really isn't the same to us. I will still shop Publix, but now we will have to drive further and no more warm baguettes with coffee for breakfast on those special Sunday mornings. I hope all the employees will keep their jobs and no one will be left without. Thank you AP Publix for all the wonderful years of service with a smile, and quality that is second to none! You will be missed!
