Avon Park residents recycle 42 tons of material per month
By CHRISTOPHER TUFFLEY
AVON PARK -- City Manager Julian Deleon updated the city council regarding the recycling program and a staff sanitation rate analysis.
City residents now recycle approximately 42 tons of material per month, Deleon said. That is slightly more than 18 percent of the total garbage collection weight.
"Based on this preliminary review, staff found that each customer class for residential customer versus commercial customer is appropriately paying their equitable share to fund the city's solid waste collection system," Deleon said.
The city does have the highest residential rate in the county, Deleon added, even though the monthly fee was reduced from $20 to $18 in 2011-2012, and staff is recommending another reduction to $16 in 2013-2014.
Sebring charges $12.75 per month; Lake Placid $15; and the county $10.83
Commercial Dumpster rates, on the other hand, are the lowest in the county -- ranging from $78 to $329 depending on volume. In Sebring, the rates range from $113 to $450; in Lake Placid from $110 to $440.
Deleon said the solid waste sanitation budget is in good shape, with an unaudited reserve of $1.6 million. This means, he told council, the city can buy a needed front-end loader commercial truck for cash, eliminating the cost of financing and keeping the sanitation fund debt free.
The city offers an additional, free cardboard recycling service for commercial customers that could add another 12 tons of recycled material with more capacity.
The council was told, however, that some residents resist recycling, using non-city cans for what garbage does not fit in the assigned city can. "The staff recommendation," Deleon said, "is to stop processing the additional non-city assigned garbage cans."
Additional city carts may be acquired from the city for additional $16 a month.
Thank You Julian (by: Happy AP resident - 4/24/2013)
I waited years to have recycling here and I am happy to say it has made me more aware of the product packaging I buy at the store. I am very impressed Avon Park provides this service and that the County and Sebring have not been able to figure this out. Deleon should help them because this affects the future of our planet.

"Stop processing the additional non-city assigned garbage cans" = More garbage being dispose of in the county isolated areas.
