Trucks galore on tap at first Heartland Tailgate Extravaganza
By SAMANTHA GHOLAR
SEBRING - A brand new event is taking over Downtown Sebring this weekend as the Heartland Tailgate Extravaganza kicks off 5 p.m. today with a full night of trucks, food and music.
"About a year ago I started thinking about having an event that is totally different from anything we've ever seen in this county. Then it hit me, trucks. Trucks are everywhere around here and they are such a big part of our life here in the Heartland," coordinator Lora Todd said.
After much coordinating and brainstorming with former major league pitcher and big truck afficionado Gabe White, Todd created the event that will have its first run downtown over the next couple of days. White was instrumental in Todd's planning and creation of the Extravaganza.
"This is a brand new event," Todd said. "We have trucks of all colors, shapes, and sizes. It's just a big variety of trucks that will be here. One of the highlights is the famous monster truck "Gunslinger" will be here throughout the event. The driver, Scott Hartsock, will be here signing autographs all weekend."
Other things on the Extravaganza itinerary include mud trucks, food vendors, live music and children's activities.
Two mud trucks from out of county -- "Obelicious" and "Big Sexy" -- will make appearances at the Tailgate.
Dozens of show trucks will line the Circle to give everyone an opportunity to check out some of the fancy paint jobs and gear that they have to offer.
"We will have lots of food vendors. There'll be barbecuing going on because you can't have an event like this without barbecue, you know," Todd said.
The Shannon Reed Band will provide musical entertainment from 6-10 p.m. tonight. Truck registration will also be held this evening; vendors will be open and ready to serve the public.
The opening ceremonies will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday. The truck show will kick off shortly following the opening ceremonies. The Ransom Band will provide live music from 12-4 p.m.
Trophies will be handed out to winners beginning at 4 p.m.
A cornhole tournament will be taking place throughout the event. All the money raised from the tournament will benefit Friends of Highlands Hammock Foundation.
The Heartland Tailgate Extravaganza will be from 5-10 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Street closures will be in effect throughout the Tailgate Party Extravaganza.
"It's just going to be good, old-fashioned fun. It's a family event and children are welcome to come out. The Children's Museum will be open so it's just going to be a very nice and fun event," Todd said.
