Albrittons to appear on Steve Harvey Show honoring mothers
By SAMANTHA GHOLAR
SEBRING - A shot in the dark turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for recent University of Florida graduate and Sebring native Ricki Albritton and her mother Diana.
The duo recently returned from an all-expense paid trip to Chicago to be a part of the Steve Harvey Show, little to Diana's knowledge at the time.
The whole experience was a surprise for the mother who was recognized and honored on Harvey's talk show for the upcoming Mother's Day holiday as well as for being just an "awesome mom."
Ricki was the driving force behind the event and counts the experience as a blessing in her and her mother's lives.
"I saw this casting thing on the show. It said something like 'Do you have the best mom in the world?' and I thought 'Well, heck yea I do. My mom is awesome!' So I just sat down and submitted an application. About 10 minutes later the show emailed me and asked when I could do an interview," Ricki said.
By the end of the day, Ricki and her mother had been invited to fly to Chicago to be a part of filming for Thursday's special mother's edition of the Steve Harvey Show.
"They asked me if I could fly up that weekend, but it was right before finals, so I just turned in everything I could that they asked for. I sent in pictures of my mom and me and a video, and everything just worked out ... About six o 'clock they called and invited us to fly up. I texted my mom and told her that she was about to get a very important phone call from Chicago and that she needed to answer it no matter what," Ricki said.
Ricki and Diana flew out on April 17; Ricki arrived an hour ahead of her mother in Chicago to surprise her at the airport. The two were picked up by a limousine and put up in a top-of-the-line hotel throughout their stay.
"It was a big secret; my mom didn't know why she was being taken to the show. I couldn't tell her the real reason, so she was all pumped up, but at the same time she was getting aggravated. She kept asking me "Ricki, what is going on?'" Ricki said with a laugh. "It was so much pressure to keep the secret and to get everything right on the camera. Thank God I'm a broadcast major and have a little background on how to act on camera so I didn't look like a lunatic."
Following hair and make-up, the two were on set where Ricki tried to keep her composure and remember the points she was supposed to speak about when the surprise was revealed to Diana.
"I kept trying to hold her hand and she is just so independent and kept brushing me away. Then finally, Steve Harvey called our names so I grabbed her hand and stood up ... I told her why we had really come and that she was being honored for being a great mom. I told him and the audience about how 10 years ago she had breast cancer and that she was such a strong woman and how she started her own company. I told them about the problems she had with her insurance and why she started her insurance company so others wouldn't go through what she went through when she found out about her cancer, and just about how such a great person she is. She is always doing something for others, especially the women in her breast cancer group. She will drop anything for any one of those 200 women," Ricki said.
After a tearful and joyful reception by the audience, Ricki and Diana were hugged and greeted by Harvey, who then surprised the mother and daughter with a free spa weekend at the Waldorf Hotel in Orlando.
"I was crying, the whole audience was crying, everybody was crying and applauding ... I'm just really thankful for the experience. I never dreamed this would happen," Ricki said.
Diana and Ricki enjoyed their full spa services of manicures, pedicures, massages and facials last weekend in the beautiful Waldorf Hotel in Orlando. Both mother and daughter have enjoyed the unique experience that has brought them even closer together.
"It couldn't have come at a better time," Ricki said. "I was just about to graduate, I was in the middle of finals and I didn't care. I got to spend all this great quality time with my mom. She's amazing."
Ricki and Diana's appearance on the Steve Harvey Show will air Thursday on NBC (channel 8 on Sebring Comcast) at 3 and 5 p.m.
