Lively show, energetic cast
By CHRISTOPHER TUFFLEY
SEBRING -- Memorial Day weekend begins Friday. The Highlands Little Theatre presents the perfect entertainment for tweens and teens -- "High School Musical II" -- beginning Thursday and running through Sunday, May 26.
The plot isn't really what matters in this musical, it's about the music and dancing.
In a nutshell, a girl has an eye on a boy and connives to steal him away from his girlfriend. Eventually, the young vixen gets her comeuppance, but the boy learns lessons too.
Mostly the play is about teenagers getting together for a talent show.
Originally a Disney production, 11 different composers wrote songs for the production.
The cast of 54 range in age from 8 to 17 years old, and are so filled with energy they could recharge a dozen car batteries. The singing and dancing, as in all HLT productions, is first rate.
Many of the cast have appeared in HLT productions in the past. Just as exciting are the number of new faces on stage.
Among the stage veterans are Olivia Hitt, who plays the cheated girlfriend. Her cousin, Sydney Hitt, plays the girl who tries to steal the boyfriend, and Austin Westergom plays the boyfriend. Other cast members include Lyndsey Reck, Cassady Hitt (Sydney's sister), Christina Acosta, Evan Reed, Easton Davis and Corey Adams.
Lindsay Lynch, who directed the show, said it serves two purposes -- providing entertainment for the young people in Highlands County and providing a venue where young people may perform.
"We tried to pick a show that would showcase talent," she said. More than two dozen adults are working behind the scenes, she added. Some are stage crew, but others are mentoring students in all aspects of theater.
There are only five performances of the show -- Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and a matinee on Saturday and Sunday. Vanessa Logston, HLT's spokesperson, warns that tickets sell quickly so there is no guarantee seats will be available. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for those under 16.
