No bond for suspects in Doty murder; more arrests coming

By ED BALDRIDGE

SEBRING -- Judge Anthony L. Rittenour Friday morning set no bond for the two suspects arrested in the Aaron Doty murder.

Jonathan Ray Rodriguez, 22, and Kenneth Felipe, 19, both appeared via video in horizontal stripes instead of the traditional orange jumps suits at their first appearance and both were denied bond on the second degree murder charges leveled by State's Attorney Pete Barone.

Barone asked Rittenour to hold the defendants without bond because of their recent attempts to elude law enforcement.

"The issue here is not just the heinous act. They returned to their home after the crime, got some videos and were watching movies when law enforcement knocked on their door. They refused to surrender, and left to another area where state marshals had to retrieve them. They have family in New York, Puerto Rico and other places, the state is requesting no bond," Barone said.

A bond of $100,000 was set for the charge of abuse of a dead body and bond of $100,000 was set for tampering with evidence for both defendants.

Rittenour explained the other bond amounts were set in case a future judge made a different ruling on the murder charges.

Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton announced Friday morning that more arrests were coming in the case.

“I am aware of at least two imminent arrests coming, and I am sure there will be some more,” Benton said after the first appearance.

“Whether they were the ones who went with them to the gas station or helped them destroy their clothes or drove them to Orlando, there will be more charges,” Benton said.

“Just because we have caught the alleged bad guys, these guys have not stopped working. They are working 24-7,” she added about her department.

Not understanding something  (by: Just a thought  -   6/23/2012)

The Traevon Martin death goes national for weeks upon weeks, calling it a hate crime. NOW, an awesome, young man (with A Christian upbringing) is brutally murdered and it NOT a hate crime? Is this reverse discrimination?

Prayer  (by: Mr. Fuji  -   6/20/2012)

Perhaps we should pray for everyone in this case. Let's fulfill the law of Christ.

Prays for all families  (by: Yesica  -   6/20/2012)

I don't know personally none of them, (Aaron, Felipe & Rodriguez) but I know all their families need prays. That's what I am doing.
I asked myself constantly "why, why, why" nobody hold them not to beat Aaron. Why please why? Why nobody call 911, why, please why????????
I know the answer.... because all been involve probably minor drinking and probably drugs has something to do...but they have to face justice too. We can't allow this happen ever again. As puertorican I feel shame for all this because we love this community and we work hard to live and this things happen.... My respect to the Doty's family. Lets pray for all because they need it.

more arrest   (by: Phyllis Phipps  -   6/16/2012)

I feel that everyone who stood by and watched them do this is just as guilty in killing.
I feel they should get the same punishment even thought they are young and what ever they where doing they where wrong for standing by and letting this happen to him.
No one has the right to take another one life.
No matter what for we aren't God.
My heart gose out to his family & classmates
This my home town.

More Arrests  (by: Candice  -   6/16/2012)

Doty Murder  (by: Pat from North Carolina  -   6/15/2012)

I am from North Carolina and come to Lake Placid often. I commend Judge Ritenour and your Sheriff Benson for following through and laying ground work for others to be arrested. They need to be!!! They are as guilty as ones in jail. Our church is praying for the young man's family.

Good job Sheriff Benson & Judge Ritenour!!!  (by: Dusty Henderson  -   6/15/2012)

Everyone needs to be used as an example in this case. Nail them to the wall.

re: more arrests  (by: L.J.Dowdal  -   6/15/2012)

So glad that they are going to make more arrests. The boys who did the killing are not the only perpetrators.. the ones who stood by and watched and even helped them... are just as guilty as the two killers!!!!! Punishment needs to be meted out to all who willfully watched and helped as well !!!!!!

AWESOME NEWS  (by: RIP   -   6/15/2012)
