TS Debby spawns deadly tornadoes in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID -- Strong storms associated with Tropical Storm Debby moved through Highlands County on Sunday, spawning multiple tornado warnings and apparently several tornadoes that touched down, killing one person and also injuring a child.
According to the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, the fatality and injury to the child occurred at a residence on Montana Trail in Venus. The fatality was reportedly a mother who died protecting her 3-year-old daughter's life. The daughter had severe injuries.
There was one house completely destroyed on Bob White Trail in the Venus area. There was severe property damage in the 800 block of Lake June Road, Twin Lakes Road and the 200 block of Cloverleaf Road.
"Authorities are continuing to respond to calls in the southern sections of the county. We will release updates as further information becomes available," Nell Hays, public information officer for the HCSO wrote.  "We ask that all residents stay indoors and away from windows during the remainder of the storm. Injuries should be reported to 911 and property damage may be called in to Highlands County Central Dispatch at 863-402-7200."
