Plenty of events planned for July 4th

There are several special events planned for today, which will be topped off with firework displays over Lake Verona in Avon Park and Lake Jackson in Sebring. Both firework displays begin at 9 p.m.

The American Legion in Avon Park, at 1301 W. Bell Street, is having a bring your own dish hamburger and hot dog fest from 4 to 6 p.m., with karaoke music from 4 to 7 p.m.

The American Legion in Sebring, at 528 N. Pine St., is serving a complimentary barbecue beginning at 1 p.m. Music begins at noon.

Sebring VFW Post 4300, at 1041 Lakeview Drive, has a flag raising planned for 11 a.m.

The Highlands Little Theatre presents its traditional hourly Patriotic Revue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Blackman Stage in the Thakker Pavilion The theater is at 356 W. Center Ave.

The Heartland Pops performs its annual patriotic concert at Our Lady of Grace's Grogen Center, which is at 595 W. Main St. in Avon Park. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and will end by 8:30 p.m. in plenty of time for audience members to get to Donaldson Park for the fireworks display. The concert is free, although donations are very much appreciated.

The First Presbyterian Church in Avon Park, at 215 E. Circle Street, presents its first Food, Fun and Games 4th of July celebration. There is a bounce house and inflatable slide for children, and complimentary hot dogs. The party is from 5 to 8 p.m. People are welcome to stay and watch the fireworks from the church's front lawn. Popcorn and water will be served.
