AVON PARK -- "My favorite doctor," said a passerby Friday morning at the Oaks of Avon Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility about Dr. Cary Pigman.
Then she hugged him.
Pigman, a Republican candidate for District 55 of the Florida State House of Representatives, was on hand in the City of Charm Friday morning to talk about issues with potential constitutions.
"I am hear to listen," he said when asked why the visit.
"Folks at the Oaks have health care as well as other concerns. I want to learn and discuss what their issues are," Pigman said.
"We are discussing health care, Medicare and Medicaid. We all have to pay for Medicare and Medicaid," Pigman said. "That social contract is extremely important."
Pigman stated that he strongly believes the country must "solve the challenges facing health care in America without losing the quality of care or damaging the doctor-patient relationship."
Pigman does not want to turn health care over to government bureaucracy and bury it in red tape, but states that he believes in helping small businesses offer affordable health care to their employees, and providing an insurance deduction for the self employed.
Pigman spent six years in the U.S. Navy as a battalion surgeon attached to the 2nd Marine Division.
When his tour was over, Pigman went on to become a faculty member at George Washington University.
According to his website, Pigman moved to Highlands County 17 years ago and currently resides in Lake Placid.
"The challenges Florida faces require a mix of bold leadership and common-sense principles. I've proudly served my country and now I would like to serve our community in Tallahassee," Pigman stated on his website.
Pigman recently completed a tour of duty in Northern Iraq as a Lt. Colonel and physician and has worked in all facets of the medical field, including health insurance and utilization, his website says.
Pigman is competing for the House seat against Democrat Crystal Drake and fellow Republican Randy Johnson.
