Elwell to speak at next Voters League meeting
By BARRY FOSTER
SEBRING -- In the wake of his town hall meeting, the Highlands County Voters League will host Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell at their session this Thursday night.
"We thought it would be good to have him, especially in light of all the newspaper and radio coverage the budget has received since that time," said Voters League spokeswoman Nell Roberts. "I'm sure people now will have more questions than they did the first time they saw it."
Elwell made a presentation last week on the county's proposed 2013-2014 budget. It was formally presented to Highlands County commissioners at their Tuesday morning meeting. Workshops have been planned to deal with a budget shortfall expected to be $3.5 million, which is nearly twice last year's $2 million gap.
However, Roberts said she expects there will be discussion about more than the proposed county budget, noting that questions on the county's Economic Development Commission/Industrial Development Authority and the Tourist Development Council also are expected.
A new feature of the Voters League meeting will be reports from other citizen groups, with representatives of the Highlands Tea Party, The Group for Better Government and Citizens for Government Accountability invited to attend.
There may also be time for spokespeople from the local Republican and Democrat parties to give updates on their activities.
"We want to give as much information as possible," Roberts said.
