By CHRISTOPHER TUFFLEY
AVON PARK -- A clerk at the Avon Shell gasoline station at 998 U.S. 27 North was wounded when shots were fired during a robbery in its convenience store Wednesday night. The call for help was received 10:25 p.m.
The clerk was transported to "an appropriate medical facility" and "is expected to survive," according to a brief press release from the Highlands County Sheriff's office sent Thursday afternoon.
According to the press release, a subject entered the store with a handgun, at which time the clerk opened the cash drawer and gave money to the gunman.
It was after the clerk had complied with the robber's demand that the shots were fired.
No details about the suspect or the clerk's injuries were provided.
The store was being processed Thursday morning by crime scene units. A K9 unit vehicle was parked in the store's parking lot, but it is not known if the K9 was being used to track the suspect.
