Remick wants to bring change to AP council
By CHRISTOPHER TUFFLEY
AVON PARK -- Jonathan Remick, 26, is running for the city council against incumbent Parke Sutherland.
Remick works at his family's business, Avon Park Gunsmoke, at 917 W. Main St. He has been there for three years.
The gun store, he said, has a coffee pot and chairs and is a place where people hang out to discuss the issues of the day.
"A variety of people come in from all the (town's) communities," Remick said. "I've kept an ear out and listened since I've been here. I didn't chose to run for myself, I just kept hearing over and over that there needed to be change, change, change -- definitely heard that people are not happy.
"I had someone come in who said if you're not a part of city hall or the council you can't get something done. I kind of saw a need, and thought I should be a catalyst."
Remick emphasized his campaign is not about accusations. "I'm not faulting the city; there just needs to be change. I'm not blaming anyone on the council. This isn't an issue of who voted for or against.
"My main concern," he said, "is the lack of transparency. This is 100 percent a small town. I wouldn't expect all the secrecy. Normally in a place this small you can't keep anything secret."
Remick wants to revisit the issue of "reasonable notice" for city council meetings. He feels the public should have at least seven days' notice about an upcoming agenda. He especially wants to get citizens more involved.
He would like to see the newly instituted public poll on the town's website expanded. Right now an individual can only indicate for or against a particular question. Remick wants the public to be able to express its' views, provide feed back, ask questions and suggest ideas. "The poll has to be expanded, something to get communication going. Not everybody can get to meetings to express their concerns. We need a direct (line) to city hall and the council."
He also thinks holding informal town meetings, like County Commissioner Don Elwell, is a useful idea. This way people don't have to feel intimidated by the official government process, he said.
Remick urges citizens to vote. "On the local level, votes count more than they do in national elections. One vote out of 200 carries a lot more weight the one out of millions."
He added, "Voters should pick people because of their ideas, not because of the (political) party they belong to. I don't think politics should be like football; it's not about teams."
Remick was born in Clewiston, moved with his family to Lake Placid where he was home schooled while in high school. At that same time, he took part in many activities at Lake Placid High School.
Graduating from Full Sail University in Orlando, Remick has a bachelor's degree in film, and a master's degree in business with a focus on marketing.
As to the future, he plans to remain in Florida and hopes one day to start a micro-brewery. "I like Avon Park," he said.
"It's so central and surrounded by big cities. It is a great hub to distribute from. I have no political ambitions. I am not doing this as a career. It's just my way to help.
"I'm not so far up in the clouds that I think I can walk in and make everybody happy," he said. "But I'd like to try."
Finally (by: J.R. - 8/28/2013)
Finally, someone who isn't involved in the normal bureaucratic crap who wants to shake things up and work for the people.
new council (by: we the people - 8/27/2013)
Can we start off by firing deleon please? And why is shueller running for mayor again? Could it be the lucrative contracts her husband gets from the city. I hope buba gets elected mayor. People, we need fresh blood in avon park. I see no improvement, just drama kings and queens. I hope our state intervenes soon, i sense a major win by rowan, a jury of peers will decide adolph deleons fate!!

A sign (by: Blindman~ - 8/27/2013)
This candidacy is a sign that the Macklins, and a few minor factions along with their representive Garrett Anderson are digging in for a long term war in Avon Park. There is no way to compare the qualification or lack thereof between Jonathan Remik and Parke Sutherland except to say Mr. Remick has no experience and Mr. Sutherland has vast experience and has served Avon Park well. This shouldn't be much of a contest but to Mr. Sutherland I would like to say... Don't rest on your laurels. For the sake of your city and all who dwell within, run a strong campaign and win!
Not so blind blindman (by: curious - 8/26/2013)
I am not a big fan of gun sales as long as they are sold to people that have had some kind of a back ground check. I wonder if Remick would be so kind as to let us know what his business practice is to sell/ trade guns. I think this would be telling on what kind of man he is.
Yep (by: Mark S - 8/26/2013)
There's a hidden agenda in here. I guarantee it.
no change at all (by: disollusioned - 8/26/2013)
I never give a lot of validity to comments made on these blogs but I if there really is a connection between Remmick and Anderson, well that says it all.
Fun Fact! LOL (by: Moe - 8/26/2013)
Its funny they keep bringing up the new canidates brother working at the FD, when the canidate he is running against is married to a department head and second in charge of the city. Lol. She can actually make crucial decisions and persuade to vote her way. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. Just saying!
Finally, someone new. (by: "Tootsie", A very concerned citizen - 8/26/2013)
For the first time a well educated and respectful candidate that isn't in the running for something personal to gain. Council is in place for the citizens, they do not control labor unions or pay rates. That's the Great city managers job through plans and negotiations. As far as I know the city workers are locked into contracts for wages, and nothing can really change because of this election. Jonathan seems like a very positive mind and even if he were elected it wouldn't change anything in the main plan of the city, just make things even more progressive. I agree that separation by government parties is not the way to go, we should all bond together and move forward through this sick and declining economy together. Mr. Remick u have my vote.
Truth be told (by: Lynn - 8/26/2013)
Someone in City Management is worried about losing their jobs and that would be the truth. Oh and we should all thank Ann Shrum for her efforts in the great tasting water after all she did get us on the map I was at the meeting when the Council recognized her for an outstanding job she done with a lot of the older equipment in place. You have my vote Mr. Remick
Oh... BTW (by: Blindman~ - 8/26/2013)
"I just kept hearing over and over" & "I kind of saw a need". Please Jonathan, citizens should know your families gun store sells Anderson Ammo from Garret Anderson... at least you were selling it last year when I was in your store. You failed to mention that here didn't you?
Tell us what secrets (by: See it like it is - 8/26/2013)
secrets like what? The one you are keeping from the citizens about having a brother heavily involved in a city union?
Disclosure (by: Hover - 8/25/2013)
He wants open govt, but fails to disclose that his brother works at the fire house, and he sells Anderson's inferior bullets at his shop. Lairs with pants on fire.
Unhappy people (by: head hunter - 8/25/2013)
I bet whoever you claim isnt happy are the same people that arent happy with Obama. Same ol same ol.
why not have your say now? (by: No more change! - 8/25/2013)
It always bothers me that people feel that they cant have a voice when the microphone is on at the council chambers for you to get up and voice your discontent. You can call any council person as I have and get results. My garbage can is too heavy and I couldnt carry it to the curb. Mayor Schuler got me in touch with the City manager and the problem was resolved. My neighbor likes that she can go to City Hall and get instant help from the people that work there. I have never been disatisfied with the personal attention they give me or people I know have had to go to City Hall. As for the notice thing, have you ever gone to a council meeting and asked the council why they cant get it out within seven days? Seems reasonabale enough for you, but not enough to change my world.
(by: Blindman~ - 8/25/2013)
Avon Park has already been going through a change for the better. The town always had problems, especially with its finances and the city manager along with the city council has solved that and many other issues including lowering taxes. Why change it back to the way it was before? Avon Park has never been more financially sound than it is right now. If it ain't broke, why try to fix it?
Jonathan (by: Melissa T. - 8/25/2013)
Wow!! So glad you are running. We are excited for new blood around here. It is nice to see someone with a fresh perspective on things. Seems like you are a very levelheaded man.
Jonathan Remick (by: Sam the Black Man - 8/25/2013)

Micro brewery (by: I see the real you - 8/25/2013)
Ya can't have a micro brewery without great tasting water. You will have to thank Deleon and the workers of the City for giving you the perfect water for your start up business Mr Remmick!
