SEBRING -- Seventy-seven Highlands County elementary students achieved perfect scores on the 2011 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

Of the perfect scores, 34 were on the reading test; 34 on the math test, five on the writing test and three on the science test.

Ten students made perfect scores in two subjects and one student, Vaidehi Persad a fourth grader at Sun 'N Lake Elementary. was perfect in all in three. At least one student in every elementary school had at least one perfect score. Lake Placid Elementary School had the most perfect FCAT students with 14. Sun 'N Lake Elementary School had 12.

In front of a packed audience at the school board chambers Tuesday night, Becky Fleck, assistant superintendent for curriculum, and Joyce McClelland, director of elementary education, handed out the medals.

There was never any question, Fleck said -- no matter how tight the budget became -- but that the district would find the funds to purchase medals for the students.

"These kids rose to the top," she said, "even with a more difficult test."

McClelland beamed at the standing room only crowd. "Thank you for making it a priority to be here tonight," she said to the parents and families. "This is truly a celebration.

FCAT Perfect Scores  (by: Allison Willey  -   9/9/2012)

Congratulations to all those bright children who worked hard to acheive a perfect score on the FCAT. Funny story, my daughter had a perfect score in middle school in the reading / writing portion. The school board spelled her name wrong on the certificate and never corrected it! Lol.
