SEBRING -- Amelia King, who was just shy of her second birthday, died from heat stroke after being left in her father's truck for an extended period of time in Spring Lake on Friday.

Christopher Sneed King, 34, of 507 Ryan Road, was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect resulting in great bodily harm. He is being held in the Highlands County Jail on no bond until his first appearance.

The high temperature on Friday was in the low 90s. It was around 2:15 when 911 operators received a call about CPR being in progress on Amelia. Paramedics responded, but were unable to save her.

A hearing was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon after press time at the Highlands County courthouse to determine who should take over custody of Amelia's 4-year old brother. Both children lived with their father following a divorce.

Toss this 'father' in a dumpster and be done with it.

WHO WAS THE JUDGE?  (by: sebring_resident  -   9/13/2012)

Who was the Judge that allowed this man to gain access to his daughter? I think he is the man to be held responsible for this tragedy. WHO WAS THIS JUDGE, so we don't re-elect an idiot for not listening to this case!

The victims of METH are children  (by: Cindy Lanier  -   9/13/2012)

The real victims of meth are the children. Their parents become nonfunctioning. Meth is rampant in Highlands County and all over the U.S. These children go without basic needs, such as enough food, decent clothing, or nurturing. They raise themselves from the time they are old enough to crawl. I call people on meth "vampires". They run like a bat all night long and then sleep all day. They wake up in the afternoon, yell at their kids all day, then run the streets all night. Meth addicts damage their children both physically and emotionally. I don't usually post comments, but I am so hurt and angry about how that little girl suffered before she died. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make ALL drug abuse go away! I wish the first time people were picked up for drugs, they were automatically confined to a one year in house drug rehab program. Because if an adult is picked up for drugs, its not experimentation, like some teens go through. They are putting their families through a nightmare.

Who's to blame???  (by: Ppg  -   9/12/2012)

He wanted to take the kids to his grandparents resort! I feel sorry for you for being a hateful, ungiiving person.

Judgemental people  (by: A caring person  -   9/12/2012)

There are two sides to every story. This was a terrible terrible traffic accident. Mom DID NOT WANT custody except on a a couple of weekends when it suited her lifestyle. The father admits he should have watched more closely, but come on, are you trying to tell me your children never went outside without you knowing. DAD did NOT leave baby in truck. This is just a typical newspaper headline grabber to make the paper money. THE ACCOUNTING OF THIS ACCIDENT WAS PURLY FROM A FOUR YEAR OLD, ACcounting. FURTHERMORE, DFS WOULD NOT LET GRANDFATHER BE PRESENT FOR QUESTIONING. Tell me, as a guest in this county and following this story, it sickens me not only the incompetent officials, but the insensitivity of the people here. I a sorry this family had such a traffic loss, but just imaging what this man must live with the remainder of his life? Think about it...

Amelia  (by: Evelyn Evans  -   9/12/2012)

It always saddens me when such a tragedy happens how quickly folks rush to judgement when they only know the bare facts. Does anyone really think this man just callously left his daughter in a car? Does everyone think he is just languishing in jail and couldn't care less? Has anyone ever heard of "judge not lest ye be judged"? He will be paying for his lapse in judgement for the rest of his life. Don't let your outrage get the better of you. Just be grateful and say "there but for the grace of God, go I" One never knows.

Again, everyone is blaming DCF and it's the Highlands county family judge that makes the final decision in custody matters.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, Sweet Amelia. Rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus.

correction of story  (by: get it straight  -   9/11/2012)

The father did not have sole custody it was a fl shared 50/50 custody which should of never been allowed to the father due to his history. The child was in the fathers time share period he was neglectful.
