Presentations were made Oct. 4, Oct. 24 and the final was on Tuesday. School board chairperson Donna Howerton spoke for the board Thursday when she expressed her admiration for the students and the schools they attend. "It was phenomenal the number of students at both elementary and secondary levels of perfect FCAT scores. "Great job to all students in their focus on academics with the many other activities they include. "Also great job," she said, emphasizing the word great, "to The School Board of Highlands County employees in their involvement with each of our students. It was great to see that support, along with family and community members who came out to recognize our students also." Among those young scholars who answered every question correctly were a handful who went even further -- achieving perfect scores on more than one test, or being the only student to ace a particular subject area on the test. For example, Carson Angell, from Sun 'N Lake Elementary was the only student in the district to achieve perfect scores in three subjects -- math, reading and writing. Other students also excelled in more than one subject. At the secondary school level, Benjamin Collins, at the time in the eighth grade in Sebring Middle School, aced reading and writing, and Dante Lepe, then a sixth-grader at Hill-Gustat, aced reading and math. At the elementary level, Isabella Knott of Fred Wild Elementary School was perfect in reading and math. At Lake Placid Elementary, Kathryn Smoak was perfect in science and math.
