News-Sun staff

LAKE PLACID -- A 15-year-old Lake Placid Middle School student was charged with bringing a gun to school on Wednesday.

According to a Highlands County Sheriff's Office report, Kerry Lanier, the school's dean of students, learned that Daryl Jake Morris had a gun in his possession and told the school resource officer.

A .22-caliber revolver was found in Morris' book bag, the report said. Morris had no ammunition for the gun, the report said, adding that Morris told the deputy that he brought the gun to school "for protection."

Morris was charged with possession of a firearm on school property, a third-degree felony, and transferred to the juvenile detention facility in Bartow.
