This year's Bike Fest includes a wedding

Special to the News-Sun

SEBRING - The 15th Annual Highlands Pedalers Bike Fest on Dec. 7-9 will be highlighted by a wedding between two avid bicyclists, who are riding and bringing all their friends. This is a first for the event.

The event, hosted by the Highlands Pedalers and Kenilworth Lodge, also features a century ride all in Highlands County, as well as 20-, 35- and 62-mile routes. The routes will be monitored by two professional sag services, Bike Sag and Velo Sante, both of whom will change flats, pick up tired riders and fix minor breakdowns. Refreshments along the routes are provided by the Apostolic Church.

Riders (375 of them) are expected from 15 different states besides Florida. This is a 50 percent increase over last year's numbers. These colorful spandex clad bicyclists look forward to riding on the low traffic, scenic country roads and sharing the road with the courteous drivers of Highlands County. All bicyclists are required to wear helmets and observe the rule of the road.

Local hotels used by the bicyclists include Kenilworth Lodge, Inn on the Lakes, La Quinta, and Chateau Elan. Gourmet lunches by Chef Mac are included in the registration fee. Discounts are available for local restaurants such as Chicanes and Palm Diner. Euphoria Day Spa will provide massages for tired bicyclists.

Many vendors will be available with bicycle-related merchandise, such as Sun Cycles, Bike Shop of Sebring, Velo Sante and Boston Bill Sunglasses.

Local riders are welcome to sign up for the event, which is not a race. Visit either www.Highlands pedalers.com or www.Highlands bikefest.com to find details.
